Historic Mission in Downtown San Luis Obispo, CA

Founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1772, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was the fifth of twenty-one missions constructed in California. Unique in both design and function, the mission features a one-of-a-kind L-shaped structure, an impressive belfry, a vestibule, gardens, and fountains. The mission is situated in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo and is one of the few that still continues to function as a fully operational church.

Active Mission

While most of California’s missions are open as museums and landmarks, the Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa still operates as a parish church. Weekday masses are held at 7am and 12:10pm. Saturday masses are held at 7am and 5:30pm. Sunday masses are held in English at 7am, 9am, 11am and 6pm; and in Spanish at 12:30pm and 7pm.

Downtown San Luis Obispo

Steps away from the Mission is downtown San Luis Obispo, a quaint college town that is home to a wide range of local shops, national retailers, restaurants, and bars. Be sure to visit the Thursday night Farmer’s Market when Higuera Street, the main downtown drag, closes down for the weekly festivities that include live music, great food, fresh local produce, and more.

FAQs

  • What are the popular points of interest?

The museum offers visitors a look into mission life through displays of artifacts and photos. The gardens are a perfect place to enjoy old fountains, beautiful flowers and trees and visitors can pick up souvenirs at the gift shop.
  • How much time should I allow to see the mission?

Allow at least 30 minutes for a self-guided tour (longer if you want time to enjoy the gardens). Plan an hour for guided tours, which are offered only when docents are available.
